Compare VoIP providers - Part 1

Searching for a VoIP service provider can be hard work. There are so many to choose from and they all offer different types of packages. To make the job a little easier we took a look at some of the most popular providers to allow you to see at a glance the differences between them.

You will find short VoIP reviews about Lingo, iConnectHere, 1TouchTone, Packet8, MyPhoneCompany, and Opex. Latest update: September 2005. For more detailed and the latest information about each company please click through to their website.

iConnectHere has 4 plans ranging from $15.99 to $49.99 and all plans include an ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor) that allows you to use existing phone equipment with VoIP. The iCall North America plan at $15.99 offers 800 minutes of calls within Canada and the United States. Additional minutes are charged at 2.3 cents a minute. International calls range from 2 cents a minute to the UK to 16 cents a minute to India.

The iCall World plan ($24.99) offers 1000 minutes of calls to Canada and the US as well as 250 international minutes. iCall Unlimited ($29.99) has unlimited calls to the US and Canada but international calls are charged at the regular iConnectHere rates. Finally, BizCall Unlimited ($49.99) has unlimited calls to the US and Canada and international calls at the regular rates.

Be sure to check out the fine print on the 'Unlimited' plans. Unlimited calls are 'based on normal business use for one small business' and 'based on normal residential usage for one household.' This seems to imply that their unlimited plans are not really 'unlimited.'

Lingo has 3 classes of plans – home, office and international. Home plans start at $7.95 and go up to $19.95 a month. The higher priced plans give you more calling time to Canada, the United States and Western Europe.

The two office plans ($49.95 and $99.95 a month) offer unlimited calls to the US, Canada and Western Europe, with calls to Asia also included in the more expensive plans. The office plans include a fax line and features like voice mail and 3-way calling.

International plans are available that allow you to make unlimited calls to Mexico ($29.95), Asia ($34.95) and worldwide ($79.95). These plans also include free calls within Canada and the United States.

All of Lingo's plans allow you to choose phone numbers in your own area as well as in 15 countries worldwide.

1TouchTone offers three basic plans. The Basic residential plan at $14.99 includes 500 minutes of calls

There are three basic plans offered by 1TouchTone. The Basic residential plan at $14.99 includes 500 minutes of calls within Canada and the United States with extra minutes charged at three cents each. The Unlimited plan is available at $29.99 and allows you to talk for an unlimited time within the United States or Canada. Both these plans charge extra for international calls.

The bVoice Business plan ($34.99) offers unlimited calls within Canada and the United States with extra charges for international calls. All these plans come with an ATA so that you can use your existing phone equipment. There's also a $29.99 activation fee on each account.

For larger businesses there is also a plan called the nPBX which allows an unlimited number of extensions within the organization. The price of $44.99 a month includes unlimited calls in Canada and the United States.
